President Donald Trump said Tuesday that North Korea should make a deal on nuclear weapons, encouraged voters to back the Republican candidate in Virginias governors race, and said more people would have died in the Texas church shooting if there was more vetting for gun buyers.
COME TO THE TABLE
In a notable softening of his rhetorictoward Pyongyang, Trump said in Seoul: It makes sense for North Korea to come to the table and to make a deal thats good for the people of North Korea and the people of the world.
At a joint news conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Trump didnt say he wanted direct diplomatic talks with North Korea. But he did say he had seen a lot of progress in dealing with the country. Trump has in the past threatened North Korea with fire and fury if it acts against the U.S. or American allies.
TRUMP TWEETS AS VIRGINIANS VOTE
In a series of tweets, Trump urged Virginians to elect Ed Gillespie as the next governor of Virginia, where voters headed to the polls Tuesday. Trump ripped Gillespies Democratic opponent, Ralph Northam, saying hed been horrible on the economy and that hed allow crime to run rampant in the state.
Northam, a pediatric neurologist, narrowly leads former lobbyist Gillespie in the RealClearPolitics average of polls. Northamtold the Guardian that he would try to find common ground with Trump if he wins, on issues including building up the military.
